The International Federation of Health Plans, a group representing the CEO’s of health insurers worldwide, publishes a guide on the international cost of common medical services. For almost everything on the list, there is a large divergence between United States and everyplace else. Patients and insurance companies in US pay higher prices for medication, imaging tests, basic health visits and common operations. For a typical angioplasty, the average US price is $32,000 compared with $6400 in Netherland, or $7400 in Switzerland. Also for other medical services US costs are much higher than other countries for the same quality of service.
