Our immune system is made up of various organs, cells and proteins, and is designed to fight harmful things that enter our body from the outside or harmful changes that occur inside our body. The main tasks of the body’s immune system are to fight disease-causing germs, recognize and neutralize harmful substances from the environment, and fight disease causing changes in the body. A huge proportion of our immune system is actually in our GI tract. We have 100 trillion or so microbes that live in various nooks of the human body, the largest colonies are in our gut. These beneficial bacteria within the body have an enormous influence on our metabolism, hormones and genetic makeup. These microbes help us get the nutrients from our food, help balance our mood, sharpen our focus, and build our immune system. When there are not enough good microbes, the bad microbes take over resulting in an imbalance. This takeover weakens immunity and makes us susceptible to illness and disease. However our body responds to various medication, drugs, painkillers, antibiotics, all depends on our microbiome. To boost the immune system: eat foods rich in fiber; eat colorful foods that give us a different set of antioxidants; eat spices and seasonings such as turmeric, black pepper, ginger, garlic and other spices which have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties; avoid foods that are processed, filled with sugar, artificial chemicals. preservatives; drink adequate amount of water, get supplements if needed; exercise and stay physically active; get adequate sleep; avoid smoking, avoid/limit alcohol; practice yoga, deep breathing and meditation. These practices can help build a stronger immune system. It is also important to practice general hygiene rules such as washing hands and keeping your environment clean.
