According to Eco Watch, an equivalent of one garbage truck of plastic is dumped in the ocean every minute. It is now predicted that by 2025 there will be eight million metric tons of plastic in the ocean. Plastics do not biodegrade, instead they slowly break down into smaller pieces of plastic called microplastics which remain in the ocean for centuries, killing marine life. One of the plastics, Styrofoam is made of polystyrene, which is very hard to break down. The EPA has stated that chronic exposure to styrene is harmful to the nervous and respiratory systems. Styrofoam has created a huge garbage patch in the ocean harming the marine eco-system. The plastic is harmful to the environment. There is dire need to make lifestyle changes now to save the planet. This is the time to make changes to how you eat, drink and shop to avoid use of plastic as much as possible.
