China is planning to dispatch a 100,000-strong army of ducks to help Pakistan combat a massive locust infestation. China deployed ducks, whose natural diet includes insects, to fight a similar infestation in the northwestern region two decades ago was considered to be quite effective. Using ducks as a “biological weapons” is a cheaper and more environmentally-friendly alternative to pesticides. Ducks are also more suited to the task than other poultry, such as chickens. Ducks like to stay in group, so they are easy to manage. A duck is also capable of eating more than 200 locust per day, compared to just 70 for a chicken. Pakistan was invaded by the locust swarm last year, which proceeded to lay a waste to the country’s cotton crop and is now menacing the wheat harvest. The locusts plaguing Pakistan have prompted a national emergency to protect crops and farmers.
